Kajabi vs Teachable: Which Course Platform Fits a Coaching or Wellness Practice?
Kajabi and Teachable are the two names that come up first when a coach or practitioner decides to sell a course. They are built for the same job and priced very differently, and the difference is mostly about caps: what each plan lets you have before the next plan is required.
Everything below is taken from the two companies' own pricing and feature pages, checked on the dates listed at the end. We sell a competing product, so we have kept to what each site says and left the judgement to you, apart from the last section, where we say plainly what neither does.
The plans, as printed
Kajabi publishes three plans: Basic at $179 a month ($143 billed annually) with 5 products, 2,500 contacts, 1 website and 2 admin users; Growth at $249 ($199 annually) with 50 products, 25,000 contacts, 1 website and 11 admins; Pro at $499 ($399 annually) with unlimited products, 100,000 contacts, 3 websites and 26 admins. Kajabi Payments card fees are 2.9%, 2.8% and 2.7% plus 30 cents by plan. There is a one-month free trial.
Teachable publishes three plans and a custom tier: Starter at $39 a month ($29 annually) with a 7.5% transaction fee, 5 products, 100 active students and 1 admin; Builder at $89 ($69 annually) with no transaction fee, 10 products, 1,000 active students and 1 admin; Growth at $189 ($139 annually) with 50 products, 5,000 active students, 5 admins and a custom domain; and Custom by contact. There is a 7-day trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
What the caps mean in practice
The two platforms meter different things.
Kajabi meters contacts and products. Basic stops at 2,500 contacts; a newsletter list that grows past that forces Growth at $249. Products are capped at 5 on Basic and 50 on Growth. Email itself is unlimited on every plan.
Teachable meters active students, products, and on Starter, the sale itself. Starter stops at 100 active students and takes 7.5% of each sale on top of card processing. Builder removes the fee and allows 1,000 students. A custom domain is listed only from Growth up, so on Starter and Builder your school lives on a Teachable address.
For a practice with a few hundred people on the list and one or two courses, Teachable Builder at $89 is the cheaper seat. For a practice whose list is the asset and whose email needs to be unlimited, Kajabi's higher price buys the thing Teachable meters.
Coaching, sessions and the live side
Both treat coaching as a product type inside the course platform. Kajabi lists coaching programs with one-on-one and group session management; an open booking calendar that reads your own availability is not listed. Teachable lists coaching products that schedule meetings and video calls with an intake block; a calendar that reads Google or Outlook availability is not described.
Neither lists ticketed events, capacity limits or waitlists. If your practice runs workshops or retreats with a room to fill, both platforms expect another tool for that.
Email, website, memberships
Email: Kajabi includes unlimited broadcasts, sequences and segmentation on every plan, with contacts capped by plan. Teachable lists built-in email marketing; a CRM with contact records, a lead pipeline and texting is not listed.
Website: Kajabi includes a website and landing pages, 1 site on Basic and Growth and 3 on Pro. Teachable includes a site builder on every plan, with a custom domain from Growth up.
Memberships: both list memberships as a product type on every plan.
Apps, podcasts, tax
Teachable includes iOS and Android student apps on every plan, and Teachable Payments collects and remits sales tax and VAT on digital sales across countries. Kajabi offers a member mobile app, podcast hosting inside the product, and up to three websites on Pro. If your students expect an app icon, both deliver; if you sell into several countries, Teachable's tax handling is the practical difference.
Who each one suits
Choose Teachable for a first course to a small audience, a tight budget, or a global student base where tax handling matters. Builder at $89 with no transaction fee is the plan most practitioners would land on.
Choose Kajabi when the email list is the business and needs to be unlimited, when you want the website, the courses, the memberships and a podcast under one roof, or when you run several brands and want three sites on Pro.
What neither one does
Neither Kajabi nor Teachable lists bookkeeping, a bank feed, ticketed events with capacity and check-in, or a booking calendar that reads your real availability with intake and waivers at booking. For a course-only business those are somebody else's problem. For a coaching or wellness practice they are the other half of the business.
ColibriOS is built for that other half and the course side together: courses with student portals, quizzes and certificates on every plan, unlimited contacts and email, a website on your own domain from the first plan, booking from your calendar, workshops and retreats with capacity and deposits, and bookkeeping that keeps itself, at a flat price with no fee per sale. The row-by-row comparisons are on Kajabi alternatives and Teachable alternatives, and the whole coaching business on one system is on the online coaching platform page.
Colibri helps you organize your income and expenses. It is not a tax preparer, accountant, or a substitute for professional tax advice.
